第１章 ビートルズがやってくる
ボクの毎日は寝ても覚めてもビートルズだった。
朝起きてすることと言ったら先ずラジオをつける、大袈裟でなく聖書チャンネル以外でビートルズを流していないラジオ局はなかったので目覚めの１曲はビートルズで始まるのが日課だった
キッチンに行き、そこでその日の朝飯、リビングルームにある買ったばかりのステレオでビートルズのレコード盤に針を落とす、そしてダウンタウンにあるドラッグストアまで出勤、父親の運転するクルマでの道中もラジオはビートルズだった。
そして店に着く、開店準備から閉店の時間まで店に流れる音楽は地元のラジオ局から届くビートルズ。
さすがに 父親は 「お前、そんな年がら年中同じ曲ばかり聴いていて飽きないものだな」と感心するやら呆れていたが、そんなことお構いなしにとにかく音楽と、いやビートルズがボクの全てと言っても過言ではなかった。ビートルズは、才能と同じくらい幸運だった。運とは、”才能がチャンス”と出会うことであり、ビートルズの才能は、適切なタイミングでアメリカにヒットしたことだと思っていた。
ラジオから流れてくるのはビートルズ
父は当たり前のようにカントリー＆ウエスタンが好きで、ビートルズは単なるフェードアウトfade-out だと言っていた。
1950年代、黒人による黒人のための音楽だったロックンロール、それをいち早くイギリスの地で取り入れて60年代に、白人による白人のためのロックンロールをアメリカに逆輸出したのがビートルズだった。
ビートルズ登場以前、ロックやポップスはアメリカのものだったし、もちろんイギリスにもそういった歌手やグループはいたにはいただろうが、ロックの本場アメリカでの成功などを想像するミュージシャンは皆無だった。
アメリカ進出の壁
1962年のデビューから１年でイギリスを席巻したビートルズにとってすらアメリカ進出の壁はとてつもなく高く、「イギリスのグループなんかがアメリカで売れるわけない」と英EMI Electric and Musical Industries Ltd との子会社の米キャピトルCapitol Recordsからさえ門前払いをしていた。
「シー・ラヴズ・ユー」She loves you 「プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー」Please Please Meといったイギリスでの大ヒット曲が、スワン Swan Song Records やヴィ・ジェイVee-Jay Recordsといったマイナーレーベルからリリースされるという状況だった。
実際アメリカのヒットチャートに顔を出すイギリスの曲は1963年の時点では全くなかった。
