第１章 ビートルズがやってくる

ドラッグストアから始まるサクセスストーリー
父親の経営するドラッグストアは映画館に併設されている。
映画館の小さな間借りからスタートし、日用品を扱いながら、街の人々の信頼を得て、顧客を増やし、空きスペースを売り場として増やし、今ではしっかり店舗を構えるに至っている。
父親のこだわりは何と言っても品揃え、その品揃えが街のマダムの心と財布をしっかりと掴みサクラメントでは知らない人はいないちょっとした有名な店になっている。
店を切り盛りするのは父親とボクの基本二人、午前中の時間帯だけパートタイムのおばちゃんがやってきて品出しを手伝ってくれる。
あとのすべての時間を二人でこなすので決して楽な商売ではない。
しかし学生時代のボクはと言えば店の手伝いはそこそこに学校をサボっては映画館併設の特権を活かし、毎日のように映画館に入り浸っては封切り間もない映画を毎日のように“ただで”鑑賞していた。
1963年に公開られたステイーブ・マックウイーンSteve McQueen (1930-1980) 主演の「大脱走」”The Great Escape” は公開してから毎日欠かさず観ていた。

封切りの日から公開が終わるまでの約３ヶ月間、観た回数は100回を超えた。
映画館のチケットもぎりのパートタイムのちょっとセクシーお姉さんは今後もこの映画館で絶対破ることのできない記録だと飽きれるやら褒めてくれたほどだった。
もちろんその記録には学校をサボる前提がなければ到底不可能だったが、暗闇の映画館はサボるにはうってつけの場所であることがその記録を後押ししてくれた。
もちろんビートルズ以前も音楽に興味こそあれ、このように関心はハリウッドが上だった。
それがビートルズの出現で一変、音楽漬けの日々に変わったってわけだ。
